Your Team Is Trying To Protect You

In a horse herd, the sentinels and lead stallion play a role that provides input to the lead mare who is out in front.

The sentinels are positioned in the middle and are charged with aligning the herd in the direction that has been set. The sentinels provide information about what is going on outside the herd in the environment. When sentinels see things, they inform the lead mare so that course correction can occur.

The lead stallion leads from the rear by supporting the pace and direction set by the lead mare. The lead stallion protects the lead mare and the herd from predators by moving to the front when his influence and reinforcement are needed.

The lead stallion and the sentinels communicate to the lead mare what she cannot see coming. They do this to keep her safe and the herd safe.

What if we humans could do the same thing? Often, if we are out in front, we think that when someone provides us with information, they are challenging our position.

What if we were to actually operate as a highly functioning team–just like a horse herd–and realize that when the people on our team are communicating with us, they are actually trying to help us.
