Up to 85% of Leaders Struggle With Today’s Challenges and Uncertainties

UNCERTAINTIES ARE REAL, BUT NOT INSURMOUNTABLE…

One thing for sure is that there’s a whole lot of surveys going on about whether leaders are prepared for the future. Depending on the survey, it could say over 50% feel unprepared, with some saying up to 85% are not prepared for future challenges.

One thing for certain is that most agree that between 50-85% today’s leaders admit they are struggling with the challenges of the modern workplace, according to multiple sources

These challenges include issues like skills gaps, communication challenges, and adapting to new technologies and work styles.

A recent McKinsey research study shows that a mobile, postpandemic, multigenerational workforce is looking for more connection, more authenticity, and more inspiration from their leaders, and that energy is becoming a critical commodity, which companies are not prepared for.

At LEAD THE WAY EQUINE LEARNING, we partner with individuals and organizations to cultivate the leadership mindset and emotional intelligence needed to thrive in today’s fast-changing world.

The future is no longer a distant concept—it is unfolding in real time. Navigating this complexity requires more than traditional training; it requires experiential learning that sharpens awareness, builds agility, and fosters authentic connection.

Here’s a more detailed look at the challenges:

Leadership Challenges:

  • Communication: Leaders struggle to communicate effectively with employees, especially across different levels and roles.
  • Delegation: Many leaders struggle to delegate effectively, impacting their ability to manage and lead effectively.
  • Adaptability:The rapidly evolving workplace, including the rise of remote work, globalization, and AI, requires leaders to adapt quickly, which can be challenging.

Technology and Innovation:

  • Keeping up with technology: Leaders need to be tech-savvy and understand how to leverage new technologies to drive business performance, but they may struggle to keep up with the pace of innovation.
  • Navigating uncertainty: The current business landscape is complex and uncertain, requiring leaders to navigate these challenges effectively.

Internal Leadership Challenges:

  • Self-doubt and fear of failure: Some leaders struggle with self-doubt, fear of failure, or lack of confidence in their own abilities.
  • Managing conflict: Leaders need to be able to manage conflict effectively within their teams, which can be a significant challenge.
  • No formal training: 85% of leaders say they receive no formal training for their new leadership role.

These challenges highlight the need for leaders to develop their skills, adapt to the changing workplace, and address the needs of their employees to improve business performance and employee engagement.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: While many businesses recognize the importance of leadership development, it’s not universally embraced. While a significant portion of businesses (over 80%) believe training is crucial for developing leaders at all levels, studies indicate that a relatively small percentage of businesses fully leverage leadership development effectively. For example, one study found that only 8% of respondents felt their companies were effectively implementing leadership development programs.

Other studies indicate that only 19% of business managers strongly agree that their leadership development programs are highly relevant to business issues.

According to Sproutworth, leadership development is important. Access the links below to read about how to develop a framework for effective leadership and what is needed to successfully implement a leadership development program.
